As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10: 38-42 NIV
Life is characterized with different choices that require man’s attention to decide quickly which choice is most needed. Attending to life questions all at the same time can be burdensome when wisdom is not applied. In the bid to meet the so-called standard of man, we oftentimes lose ourselves to the wrong service and miss out from the real thing that will bring reward. Knowing when to differentiate your goals per time is the key to having all round productivity. A need and a want are two different things that should be properly defined and understood in order to apply them adequately as the case may be. Confusion of these two terms has made a lot of people to be mentally broke and pocket wise. By definition therefore, a need is an urgent necessity you really require and cannot do without that is to be of immediate use while a want is a desire to have something that you can do without and be fine.
The passage today tells us the story of two sisters who received Jesus into their house. Martha was the person that received Jesus but Mary was the person that benefited from His presence because she was able to know her need for Him and allowed nothing else to distract her. When we fail to pick our needs in the midst of plenty of wants we end up frustrated like Martha. Don’t get busy with irrelevant things and abandon relevant ones. Distractions are removed from the way when a need is clearly identified and sticked to.
Today’s thought: “Knowing when to prioritize needs above wants in times of urgency is what will keep you safe.”
Keynote: Prioritize your life in line with necessities and don’t give attention to irrelevant events that will add little or no meaning to your life.
Counsel: Determine what you need and focus on getting it.
Prayer: Today marks the end of distraction from my life in Jesus’ name. I receive the grace to do the needful per time in Jesus’ name, amen.
